The History and Philosophy of Naturism

By Natura Library·8 min read

Naturism — the practice of communal nudity for wellness and harmony with nature — stretches deep into history.

Ancient Origins

In ancient Greece, athletes competed unclothed. The word "gymnasium" derives from gymnos, meaning naked. Roman bath culture likewise embraced communal nudity.

The Modern Movement

The organized movement emerged in early 20th-century Germany with Freikörperkultur. The International Naturist Federation was founded in 1953.

Naturism is not about the absence of clothing — it is about the presence of authenticity.

Today

Contemporary naturism intersects body positivity, environmental consciousness, and mindfulness. Communities emphasize consent, respect, and inclusivity.
